Dear Editor,
On April 3rd, Government announced a massive decrease in fuel prices. Gasoline was wholesaling at $120/litre.
On April 30th, fuel costs at the three fuel stations in Lethem ranged from $230 – $245 per litre; a mark-up of over 100%.
One service station is a government franchise. Another is owned by a high-ranking public official. Such profit margins are unconscionable during this time of unforeseen hardships for the small man.
Isn’t there anyone in higher authority who can regulate these fuel stations in Lethem?
The local authorities such as the RDC, the Lethem Town Council, the Rupununi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI) are all noticeable by their complete silence on this matter. Even the political parties who, mere weeks earlier, were tumbling over each other for our support are also very silent.
Here’s hoping that this letter meets the eye of someone in authority who may be able to bring relief to us the small man here in the Rupununi.
Yours faithfully,
M. Abraham
