The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) was last evening called to the Arthur Chung Conference Centre (ACCC) at Liliendaal where the national vote recount is being conducted following reports of a “burning smell” at the location.
This was confirmed by Public Relations Officer of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) Yolanda Ward, who said, “there was a burning smell and they were called. Currently checking and assessing the situation”.
The GFS was summoned and the building was checked but there was no evidence of a fire.
Ward later said it is suspected that the smell came from a truck which was in the compound at the time.
“It is believed that the smell could have been from a truck in the compound that was there to look after the portable toilets,” she said.
Up to press time last night, members of the GFS remained at the location to monitor the situation.
