Many communities in Georgetown are currently experiencing flooding brought on by the seasonal May/June rains.
After two days of heavy rainfall in the city of Georgetown and other parts of the country, Stabroek News drove around Georgetown to have a look at the districts that are prone to flooding. Some areas that were flooded included Kitty, South Ruimveldt, Turkeyen-Sophia and South Cummingsburg. Stabroek News also made several attempts to contact the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) to ascertain which other areas outside of the city were badly affected by the heavy rainfall but these attempts proved futile.
According to the Hydrometeorological Department, the rain is expected to last for several more days and its website has issued a “severe weather advisory”.
On Monday the CDC cautioned persons about the potential for flooding. Along with the warning, the Commission reminded those communities that were at a high risk of flooding, of the precautions that should be taken to avoid extreme damage from flooding. These include placing sandbags where needed, ensuring that all electrical items which may come into contact with flood waters are unplugged, elevation of household furniture and appliances, relocation of livestock to higher ground and the use of water purification tablets as prescribed.
