Following his first day in the World Association of Basketball Coaches (WABC) virtual coaching seminar, National Senior Men’s Head-coach Junior Andrew Hercules revealed that the conference is extremely thorough and informative.

This was disclosed during a brief interview with Stabroek Sport yesterday. Hercules, who also holds the portfolio of National 3×3 coordinator said, “I was very pleased with how applicable it was especially in the areas of in game coaching and practical scenarios. It was an excellent first day, and extremely detailed and considered both male and female applications and coaching styles.”

Hercules disclosed that the first day of the virtual training seminar, which occurred on May 12th, was hosted by Dynamo Kursk and the Spanish women’s national team coach Lucas Mondelo and covered the ‘1-3-1 Zone-Defense’.

According to Hercules, “The zone defense system is mostly played in Europe and has been effective for them given the European player’s size and length. While this defense can and is effective I believe Guyana Elite Players’ strength and characteristics best suit individual defence. It is designed with Big Mobile Players in mind. It is likely to be used more in more basketball. I love this style and would see myself using it for small periods only with high IQ players.”

His next training day is scheduled for today. It will focus on ‘Single Tag Offence & Defence’ and will be conducted by Serbian Coach Igor Stefan Kokoškov, who is currently an assistant coach for the Sacramento Kings of the National Basketball Association and the head coach of the Serbia national team.

“I expect it to be very informative, and judging from the first one that I was exposed to, I expect to learn the intricacies of technical coaching, because these are technical coaching. Lot of information to be processes, I personally wish all coaches in Guyana would take advantage of it,” said Hercules.

These Feature Coaching Clinics are being streamed on the WABC’s Facebook channel, twice a week for the duration of 25 weeks. The clinics, which are free to the public, are presented by outstanding Coaches with Olympic Games, FIBA Basketball World Cups, NBA, WNBA, Youth World Cups and NBA/FIBA Basketball without Borders coaching experience. Among the notable names that will form part of the training programme are NBA coaches Gregg Popovich and Rick Carlisle.
