The Covid-19 restrictions have left businesses facing revenue crises, causing them to operate on overdrafts, as they try to stay afloat and John Lewis Styles is one of those.
John Lewis, managing head of the Waterloo Street clothing store, told Stabroek News that the company took a big hit in its revenue. He said the company is presently operating on overdraft, as he strives to make ends meet without surrendering to the closure of the store.
He explained that in March, during the period of Guyana’s elections, revenue fell by at least 40%, due to business operations being on and off.
The closure of the company for the entire month of April, he disclosed, has affected revenues, forcing management to cut the salaries of the staff for the month of April. However, he said employees will be paid for time worked during the month of May.
Lewis, who recently re-opened his business on May 4th, said he had to make changes in order to safeguard staff, customers and at the same time increase revenue.
He said the business is now operating using more internet-based technology, where persons are utilising their Facebook page to gain information about whether an item is in stock, before taking the risk of coming in and not being able to find the item needed.
Lewis added working hours have been reduced and the business now operates on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 9 am to 3pm.
The establishment which has 17 employees, is doing its utmost to keep everyone safe.
Lewis pointed out a waiting area, seating and a sanitizing mat that are available to all persons entering the building. He also showed the cones placed around the building that ensure persons stay six feet apart, in addition to the hand sanitizers available for use.
Lewis said persons are asked to enter the building with a face mask but one is provided to those who are without.
He informed Stabroek News that, clothes and shoes tried on by customers, are sanitised using rubbing alcohol to help prevent the spread of the virus.
Lewis added, that one initiative he thinks the Government should consider is allotting more time to businesses to deal with taxes and consider giving a break from VAT.
