Linden Junior Isaacs, the man who is accused of fatally stabbing his mother-in-law at Vryheid’s Lust, East Coast Demerara (ECD) on Monday, was charged with murder and remanded to prison yesterday.
Issacs, 28, a security guard of Strathspey Squatting Area, ECD, appeared before Magistrate Marissa Mittleholzer at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court.
He was not required to plead to the charge which stated that on May 11 at Vryheid’s Lust, he murdered Velma Pickering.
Issacs was remanded to prison until June 9th when the matter will be called again at the Sparendaam Magistrates’ Court 1.
Pickering, 56, was attacked and stabbed several times about her body with an ice pick around 2.45pm on Monday.
She managed to flee from her house, where she had been with her toddler grandson, and ventured into her neighbour’s yard, where she collapsed.
A neighbour, Cheryl (only name given), recalled the now deceased woman calling out to her for help. “I was inside of my house and I heard she calling ‘Cheryl! Cheryl! Help is murder! Murder!’ When I rush outside I saw her whole body drenched in blood and she managed to come by my bridge and I rush to help her,” the woman had said.
She noted that when Pickering came out of her home, the suspect walked behind her. “My son was rushing to go over but I held him back and the suspect run up the road,” the neighbour recalled.
According to the neighbour, she called on other neighbours to help but they were unable to do anything since the woman lay lifeless on her bridge.
She explained that they had to summon the police to the scene and they took the woman to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
The motive for the stabbing was unclear, although neighbours noted that Pickering would frequently protect her daughter from being abused by the suspect.
