ERC probing ‘racially insensitive’ video, Kissoon’s store incident

The Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) has launched an investigation into a video posted on Facebook during the weekend in which a locally-based Guyanese woman made “racially insensitive” remarks about persons of another ethnicity.

In a statement issued on its Facebook page yesterday, the ERC said that the commission is concerned about the post since it can contribute to a rise in “unnecessary” tension in society.

The ERC also confirmed that it is also investigating another recent incident which occurred at Kissoon’s Furniture Store, during which a customer alleged that there was racial profiling.

In a letter to the editor which was published by Stabroek News during last week, Akola Thompson detailed her experience while she was at Kissoon’s Furniture Store at Industrial Site, Ruimveldt to uplift some items.

Thompson had described the encounter as an “attack on her dignity” while referencing the discrimination Afro-descended persons face on a daily basis. The furniture store has denied her claim.

The ERC also urged citizens to desist from making “racially motivated” remarks which can incite others. The commission reminded that persons found responsible for such acts can be prosecuted for offences under the Racial Hostility Act and the Representation of the People Act, as well as the country’s Cyber Crime Laws.

“The ERC continues to monitor Facebook and the various social media platforms,” the statement said.

ERC further pleaded with all Guyanese to exercise tolerance and respect for each other throughout their daily lives.
