An investigation has been launched after a 25-year-old mother died after delivering her baby at the Fyrish Health Centre on Saturday evening.
According to information gathered, the young woman identified as Hafeeza Mohammed, 25, was taken to the health centre after she began experiencing contractions.
After giving birth the woman was allowed to return home with her child after which she began experiencing complications.
She was rushed to the Anamayah Memorial Hospital the said evening where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
Director of Regional Health Services, Jevaughn Stephens, yesterday in an interview with reporters, extended his sympathy to the family, while noting that a thorough investigation would be carried out.
He said that based on the zero tolerance policy on home and health centre deliveries it is likely that persons will face sanctions.
However, a senior midwife at the said health centre said that for many years it has been carrying out deliveries. Persons in the Corentyne area have often spoken highly about the professionalism of the said person.
