With the Covid-19 pandemic forcing a complete lockdown of the local sporting industry, former Golden Jaguars international and aspiring coach Vurlon Mills, has initiated an online and private training session programme for junior players.
This was disclosed following a brief interview with Stabroek Sport yesterday. According to Mills, “Due to the pandemic I think it’s necessary to start the programme and stay connected and to continue training. Staying active because everyone at home doing nothing so I basically do it to keep them connected so the principles of the sport will remain registered.
Mills related that the training sessions which are either online or personal, are geared towards members of his emerging institution, the Vurlon Mills Training Academy (VMTA), an entity which was started in February 2018. He stated, “In online virtual training you don’t get to work individually with players because you don’t have the time due to the sessions being limited in duration and other individuals are also working along, so basically it’s a schedule.”
Mills further added, “However with private sessions, the players tend be more engaged plus players prefer you to work with them directly. Even though virtual training helps them to work on their skills, they tend be more attentive to the private sessions. On the virtual sessions you can’t really interact and correct them due to the limited time. Personal sessions are much more interactive as well you can be more involved in the sessions.”
Quizzed how often the sessions whether virtual online or private, are conducted, he disclosed, “Three days a week for virtual online training while four days I conduct private sessions so basically every day I am conducting training sessions.”
According to Mills, the decision to incorporate personal training alongside virtual online sessions was due to the preference of the parents and guardians of the players.
He added, “Parents prefer me to go and train their kids, the younger age group get distracted easily so they prefer this method. Kids especially between 7-9 age group, they tend to get distracted easily so they prefer the training directly instead of the virtual. Parents requested this method of training, they don’t want to do the virtual.”
Mills revealed that the response to the respective training methods have been positive and continues to increase in number with each day.
He further added, “Most parents and persons prefer also the private sessions to the online virtual sessions because most of the children have or are in common entrance classes and most attend private school schools so the times tend to clash when we have the online training. However they still make the effort once they get the link online but prefer the private training.”
