Compound Archer Winnette Lawrence recently became the first Guyanese to participate in an international archery competition.
The competition was held virtually as a consequence of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic which has stalled competitive sports. Nonetheless archers around the world, including the Guyanese, utilised technology to compete in the online competition.
Archery Guyana in a recent press release, informed of Lawrence’s successful participation.
“Amidst the COVID-19 Lockdown, Archers from around the world recently got together and competed in a novel virtual online Archery Competition.
“Archery Guyana is pleased to announce that in its 7th stage held on Sunday 17th May 2020, our very own Archery Guyana member, Winnette Lawrence, competed as the first Compound Archer to represent our country internationally in Archery,” the body informed.
The competition attracted over 1200 participants in various categories from around the world. Twenty-two countries participated in the compound archery category which included representation from Belgium, Russia, France, USA, Pakistan, Finland, Trinidad, Australia, Philippines, Ireland, BVI, Indonesia, Rep. of South Africa, Great Britain, Brazil, Spain, Greece, and Norway.
Competing from a remote location in the Virgin Islands, Lawrence went up against 12 other competitors at the distance of 30 meters. She was placed ninth, scoring 652 out of 720 points.
