A 30-year-old minibus conductor was yesterday found dead after going missing on Sunday when he was swimming with friends at the Unity foreshore, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
Rajindranauth Persaud, of 123 Logwood Enmore, was found at around 9.30 am yesterday wrapped in a fishing net at the Unity foreshore.
According to police, the now dead man left home at about 6 am on Sunday after telling his common-law wife that he was going to work. Just around 3 pm, an unknown caller contacted the Mahaica Police Station and informed ranks that a group of persons were swimming at the Unity Foreshore, when a wave covered Persaud and he did not resurface. A search was subsequently launched but Persaud’s body was not found until yesterday morning. Molly Persaud told Stabroek News that her brother and a girl were battling the currents when he seemingly made a heroic move that unfortunately cost him his life. “When we find out what happen, she seh both ah dem did drowning but he pushed her away and she get save but he go down,” she explained.
The conductor’s sister highlighted that she does not fully understand what exactly transpired, since conflicting stories are being given.
Persaud’s neighbours suspect foul play. “The only thing we could wait pon now is the post mortem, because he cudda get knock in he head [and] all sorta thing. So it seem fishy to me,” one neighbour, who did not want to be named, said.
Three persons who were with the deceased at the time of his disappearance were detained by police and subsequently released, Molly Persaud said.
