A West Canje, Berbice man was arrested yesterday after he was caught tossing a bag into the New Amsterdam Prison which contained cannabis and other prohibited items.
According to information gathered, ranks of the New Amsterdam Prison Service yesterday morning during their routine checks observed the man of Caracas, Mount Sinai tossing a bulky bag over the prison’s wall, after which he fled.
Police in a statement last evening said, “He was quickly pursued and apprehended a short distance away”.
The bag was which was retrieved contained eleven bulky parcels containing 1,638 grams of suspected cannabis, one hundred and forty packs of Pall Mall cigarettes, ten packets of bambu, three zip lock bags containing a quantity of tobacco leaves, three cellular phones with sim cards, two phone chargers, one earpiece and two energy drink bottles containing suspected alcohol.
Stabroek News was told that the man was recently released from prison after serving time for possession of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.
