A young Lusignan woman is now dead after a Route 44 minibus and another vehicle collided yesterday morning at Liliendaal, along the Rupert Craig Highway.
Sabita Sukhoo, 20, of 123 Lusignan Pasture, East Coast Demerara, was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), where she was rushed after the accident. Up to press time, two persons were at the hospital receiving medical attention, including the driver of the private vehicle involved in the crash.
Sukhoo, who was employed as a cashier at a Superbet branch, was one of three persons who were taken to the hospital shortly after the accident occurred around 9.45 am.
According to Sukhoo’s father, Hardeo Sukhoo, Sabita and her mother were travelling to Georgetown to conduct business. Sukhoo believes that his daughter was seated near to the minibus’ sliding door and absorbed most of the impact. “My daughter, she went by the sliding door by the conductor, so that’s how the blood and everything left deh,” he explained.
Traffic Officer of Region 4 (a) and Assistant Superintendent of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) Morris Fraser told this newspaper that both vehicles were heading west when the collision occurred, just obliquely opposite the former Ocean View Hotel.
The driver of the minibus was taken into custody. Sabita Sukhoo is survived by her parents and two siblings.
