A 54-year-old farmer and her nine-year-old granddaughter are now dead after a tree fell on them on Thursday afternoon at Imbaimadai, Upper Mazaruni.
According to the police, the accident occurred on Thursday around 6.20 pm at Panduck Creek, Imbaimadai. The deceased were identified as Desiree John, who was 54, and Cindy John, who was 9.
Initial investigations revealed that the deceased, her husband, daughter and three grandchildren, all of Kambaru Village, were having dinner in the part of their camp which was used as a kitchen area when a tree fell on them as a result of the heavy rainfall.
Bennet John, the husband of the deceased woman, subsequently discovered that his wife, Desiree, and granddaughter, Cindy, were pinned under the branches. The man was able to lift the branch and pull them out.
They were taken on Friday to the Imbaimadai Health Post, where the nine-year-old was pronounced dead on arrival. His wife died later in the day while receiving treatment at the Health Post.
