With 84% of the ballot boxes from the March 2nd general elections tabulated as of yesterday, the PPP/C had tallied 187,549 votes compared to 174,499 for APNU+AFC, a lead of 13,050 votes.
As of today, all counting stations will be dedicated to recounting the remaining ballots of District Four, which has 324 boxes outstanding, Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) Commissioner Sase Gunraj said yesterday.
There are two boxes from District 6 and District 10 waiting to be counted. These two boxes will be completed at some point during the morning thereby paving the way for all work stations to continue the recount of ballots from District Four.
As of yesterday an additional 84 boxes were counted bringing the total number of boxes recounted to 2,013 from 2,339 boxes or 86%. (There is usually a small difference between the number ballot boxes recounted and the number tabulated.)
At the 12 counting stations operating at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre (ACCC), 40 boxes were processed for Region 4 – 20 for District 6 and 24 for District 10.
GECOM yesterday said that a total of 1,968 General Statements of Recount (SORs) and 1,961 Regional SORs have been tabulated.
As the recount process from the historic March 2 general elections winds down, the counting should be completed by Sunday thereby paving the way for discussions at GECOM on the declaration of the long-awaited result. Should this be achieved, Chief Election Officer Keith Lowenfield will potentially have six days to complete the recount report before its June 13 submission deadline.
