The `Shivo Auto Body Workshop’ at 107 Lusignan was completely razed just after 8 am yesterday by a fire of unknown origin.
Neighbours who spoke with Stabroek News suggested that the fire which started just after 8 am began at the wooden house attached to the workshop owned by Shiv Lachman and quickly spread to the shed which housed the shop completely destroying both buildings as well as several vehicles which were on site for repairs and detailing.
Latchman told reporters that he had just left the building to buy a part at Enmore when he was called about the fire which he said destroyed about 10 vehicles which were on site.
According to the proprietor he is unsure of his next move since his losses total in the millions and he does not have insurance to cover any of it. Guyana Fire Service Divisional Officer, Gregory Wickham, explained to the newspaper that investigations into the cause of the fire are still ongoing. He said that while three fire tenders responded to the call they faced difficulties as they soon ran out of water. The officer were forced to access a neighbour’s pool and another open source before a backup tank arrived.
While on site this newspaper observed members of the fire service battling thick black smoke in an attempt to control the flames and save neighbouring buildings particularly one to the east of the workshop. Though scorched this house remained mostly undamaged.
