Two repeat offenders were each sentenced to four years in prison last Thursday after they were charged with a $13 million theft.
Patrick Smith, 46, of Albouystown, Georgetown, and Nathan Trotman, 25, of Guyhoc Park, Georgetown, made their virtual appearance before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly via Skype at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts where they were found guilty of a break and enter and robbery charge.
The charge against them stated that between January 10 and January 11, 2019, at King Street, Georgetown, they broke and entered Bissan’s Trading and stole $13 million in cash, which was the property of Bissoondyal Deodasingh.
During their previous appearance at the court both men pleaded not guilty but neither was granted bail as it was strongly objected to by Police Prosecutor Sanj Singh. Singh had told the court that Trotman, who was represented by attorney Euclin Gomes, was charged before for similar offences and had pending charges for unlawful possession of a firearm without a licence and narcotics trafficking. Singh also said Smith was previously charged and convicted and served three years in prison.
As a result, Magistrate Daly refused to grant bail to the two men. During Thursday’s virtual appearance, Magistrate Daly found that the evidence provided by the prosecutor was sufficient, hence they were sentenced to four years behind bars, each.
