More than a month since a reckless driver crashed into his yard at Bagotstown, East Bank Demerara, owner Faizul Razack is yet to have repairs done to his fence and shed as promised.
The May 5 accident also damaged the fence of Razack’s neighbour who lives two lots away. A vacant lot separates the two residences. However, the neighbour’s fence was fixed later the same week as was promised by the errant driver. According to Razack, the driver of the car had showed up at his place hours after the accident intoxicated and with a beer bottle in his hand.
This was the seventh accident to have resulted in damage to his fence and house, the resident said, adding that of the few persons who ever did return to fix his fence, only a bit of patching here and there was done. In an effort to be adequately compensated, Razack has taken the matter up with the driver’s insurance company.
“He damaged the shed, the fence, the house wall and a gate. I don’t want nobody come and do any prop up thing. I need the work to be done properly”, the man declared. He noted that usually after similar incidents, he would try to fix bit by bit until he was finished but is currently unable to do so as he doesn’t have the money. It was said that the driver of the vehicle is not the person who the vehicle is currently registered to. According to Razack it is his understanding that the registered owner was out of the country at the time of the incident. The accident had occurred in the wee hours of the morning of May 5. The car was travelling at a fast rate and Razack who was awake at the time said that it sounded like two cars were racing, noting that while the first car sped past his house, the second crashed into the median just past the Bagotstown/Eccles junction before it careened through two fences, coming to a halt in Razack’s yard.
According to Senior Superintendent Kurleigh Simon, the driver was under the influence of alcohol. He was arrested and released the same day of the accident on self-bail. The police stated that the driver claimed to be the lone occupant of the vehicle, but according to eyewitnesses, the driver along with three females emerged from the vehicle following the accident. After several such incidents, Razack had requested that a speed bump be installed at the junction and he has once again made the request. Prior to this incident, on the night of April 19th, two friends died when the car they were travelling in crashed into the median and then into Razack’s fence.
The latest incident in this area occurred on the evening on May 8, when a vehicle bearing registration PNN3419 drove into the median before hurtling into Razack’s neighbour’s yard. Several persons were injured.
