Guyana yesterday recorded 15 new cases of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
As a result, the total number of positive cases stands at 230 since the outbreak in the country in March. During the Ministry of Public Health’s daily COVID-19 update yesterday, it was revealed that 68 new tests were done during the last cycle of testing, bringing the total number of persons tested so far to 2,423. Since the start of the first phase of the re-opening plan for Guyana on June 18th, there has been an increase in the number of cases as 47 persons have tested positive out of some 350 persons that have been tested between June 18th and yesterday.
There are currently 109 persons in institutional isolation, accounting for the number of active cases. Additionally, 109 persons have also recovered from the virus so far. 16 persons are in institutional quarantine, while only one person is in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit even as the number of deaths as a result of the virus remains at 12.
The Chief Medical Officer Dr. Shamdeo Persaud applauded healthcare workers in regions One and Seven along with staff at the National Public Health Reference Laboratory for their work even as he noted that a majority of those cases that have been recorded in both of the regions are persons that are asymptomatic.
