Two persons, including the driver allegedly responsible for Sunday’s hit-and-run accident along the Enmore, East Coast Demerara Public Road, which claimed the life of a teenager, have been arrested by the police.
Police spokesman Jairam Ramlakhan yesterday afternoon confirmed the arrests.
He said that a vehicle, suspected to have been involved in the accident, was also impounded.
Stabroek News was informed that the suspects were arrested sometime yesterday afternoon.
Sheldon Major, 16, of Lot 76 Enmore North lost his life in the accident which occurred around 7 pm on Sunday. His brother, Christopher Pollard was seriously injured.
They were both rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) by the police. Major was pronounced dead on arrival, while Pollard was admitted.
At the time of the accident, the brothers were walking home from the village mosque.
The Guyana Police Force, in a statement, had said that it was seeking the public’s assistance in locating the driver, who fled the scene and was yet to be apprehended.
The police said that one of the victims was discovered lying motionless on the northern side of the public road while the other was found in a semi-conscious condition on the grass parapet. “Debris of a vehicle was seen scattered on the northern side of the road,” the police noted.
The teenagers’ father, Jermaine Peters, yesterday told Stabroek News that Pollard was discharged from the hospital on Thursday afternoon. He is currently recovering at home.
Peters said as of last evening, he did not hear anything from the police in relation to the progress of the investigation.
