A 62-year-old Brazilian gold miner was beaten and robbed of a quantity of raw gold in an attack on Friday afternoon and the police say they have arrested three of his employees, who have admitted to the crime.
The victim has been identified as Adam DaSilva, of Boa Vista, Brazil.
DaSilva suffered a fractured leg and multiple lacerations about his body and is presently admitted as a patient at the Bartica Hospital. His condition is listed as stable.
Police spokesman Jairam Ramlakhan yesterday said the attack occurred around 5.30pm at Sandhill/Oku Landing, Cuyuni River, Region Seven.
Ramlakhan said that the suspects, who are ages 19, 20 and 23 and hail from the East Bank Essequibo and Essequibo Coast, have since confessed to the crime.
They reportedly told investigators that they committed the act after they were not paid for their work.
Reports are that the raw gold which was allegedly stolen from DaSilva is worth almost $300,000 cash.
Sunday Stabroek understands that DaSilva was brutally beaten by the suspects until he told them where the gold was hidden.
The suspects were nabbed by public-spirited citizens and handed over to the police shortly after the attack. They are likely to be charged this week.
