Chairperson of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), Justice (ret’d) Claudette Singh will not be actively participating in the appeal case currently before the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ).
A letter from Justice Singh’s Attorney, Kim Kyte-Thomas to the Registrar of the CCJ noted that after some consideration, the decision was made and therefore the Chair will not be making any submissions in the case.
The GECOM Chair is the third named respondent in the intended appeal before the court. The case has been laid by opposition PPP General Secretary Bharrat Jagdeo and PPP/C presidential candidate Irfaan Ali who are challenging the decision of the local Court of Appeal to pronounce on the constitutional meaning of “votes cast” at the March 2 polls.
The Attorneys in the matter were all expected to file their submissions over the weekend, with the Attorneys for the applicant being given additional time to respond to the submissions.
The Court will decide whether it has jurisdiction to hear the matter before moving to the substantive case.
