An investigation by the Guyana Fire Service has revealed that the recent fire that destroyed the living quarters of doctors at Mabaruma, Region One, was electrical in origin.
Fire Chief Marlon Gentle has confirmed to Stabroek News that the investigation was completed and determined that the cause of the fire was electrical. The fire started on Monday at around 11 am, while the three doctors who resided at the building, were on duty at the hospital.
Gentle told Stabroek News that the doctors lost personal items in the fire and are currently being housed at a private residence provided to them by the health ministry.
The Regional Health Officer Dr Stephen Cheefoon informed that the building was being rented on an annual contract by the Regional Administration for Region One.
The fire at Mabaruma is one of four fires which occurred over the past two weeks.
On Saturday last, a family of three died in a fire suspected to be arson which destroyed an apartment complex at Sixth Street Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara. A total of 28 persons were also left homeless due to the inferno.
The fire at Cummings Lodge followed another at ‘A’ Field, Sophia, where a family of three was displaced after a fire ravaged their wooden house in a matter of minutes.
Additionally, millions of dollars’ worth of furniture and equipment were destroyed and more than two dozen employees left jobless when the ND&S furniture store and factory, located at Gap Road, La Jalousie, West Coast Demerara (WCD), was burnt after a “suspicious” fire started on June 26.
