The dead body of a Kuru Kururu, Linden-Soesdyke Highway pensioner was discovered in his yard on Friday night.
Police spokesman Jairam Ramlakhan confirmed the discovery of the body of Terrence Alstrom, 66, of Track B, Kuru Kururu, Linden-Soesdyke Highway, which was made around 10.30 pm on Friday.
There were injuries to his head and back, the police said.
Alstrom lived alone at his farm house, which is situated about two miles from the Kuru Kururu backdam. As a result, his children would check on him at regular intervals.
Alstrom’s son, Jason Alstrom, who had been visiting in-laws nearby, went to check on his father when he stumbled upon his body as he entered the yard.
Prior to the discovery, the police said that the children last received a text message from the dead man on Thursday morning.
While it is suspected that Alstrom might have been killed during a robbery, the police are awaiting an autopsy report to determine how he met his demise. His house was not ransacked but his cell phone and a bag, which he usually carried around, were not found.
Sunday Stabroek contacted the children and other relatives of Alstrom and they all said that his death has left them shocked. They said up to yesterday afternoon, they had little information about how he died. However, family was hopeful that they would get answers by the conclusion of the police investigation. “The matter is now in the hands of the police so we are waiting when the investigation is over to see what will come out of it,” one relative said.
Jason Alstrom, the dead man’s son, explained that he would usually check up on his father every two to four weeks.
Prior to the discovery, Jason was at his in-laws’ place, which is situated a short distance from his father’s house. He said that he left for his father’s house to check on him and had intended to spend the night there. “Upon going there to sleep, I discovered his body lying down flat on his face in the yard,” he said.
“Right away I ran back to my in-laws, because it was there that I went majority of the night, so I ran back straight there. I mention to them what happened, what I see because I just go, touch the body and run away because I don’t know when it happen, how it happen, if people around because definitely he was just lying down motionless,” Jason explained.
According to Jason, his mother-in-law tried calling the police but several calls went unanswered.
As a result, he said they alerted several residents of the area after which they checked around the property to see if anyone was still there.
“So we went with torch lights, cutlass and so on but no one was there…,” he said.
Jason said it appeared as though his father’s body was lying in his yard for more than a day.
Terrence was also the father of Malachi Alstrom, popularly known as “DJ Shizzle.”
The DJ told Sunday Stabroek that he last heard from his father on Thursday morning. At that time, he said everything was fine with him.
An autopsy is scheduled to be conducted on Terrence Alstrom’s body this week.
