The rehabilitation of severely deteriorated sections of the Kitty seawall, near the pump station, is currently underway.
In an invited comment, Senior Engineer at the Ministry of Public Infrastructure Jermaine Braithwaite told Stabroek News that the rehabilitation of the sea defence, which started a few weeks ago, is an ongoing maintenance project that is being carried out by contractor Ivor Allen Construction.
In two separate visits to the seawall, this newspaper observed that sections of the wall have started to erode.
Braithwaite explained that workers are replacing the deteriorating concrete structures that have been severely damaged over the years. He noted that in addition to the broken concrete, the steel rods inside the concrete began to rust due to salt from ocean water and these rods were also in dire need of being replaced as well.
He further noted that the works which are being conducted are simply because of the threat it can pose to the coastland.
The Senior Engineer further explained that the ministry plans to carry out more rehabilitation works along the coastline’s sea defences. Braithwaite explained that they are planning to facilitate a larger maintenance project which should cover just around 6 kilometers of sea defence, from Kingston to Ogle. That project will fall under the Waterfront Development Programme.
