Gary Best trial over cyclist’s death due to start in October

The trial of former army Chief of Staff Gary Best, who has been charged with causing the death of cyclist Jude Bentley, is due to begin in October.

Magistrate Rondell Weaver fixed the trial dates yesterday in Georgetown.

Best, who was represented by attorney-at-law Nigel Hughes, is scheduled to return for trial on the 6th, 8th, 9th, 13th and 15th of October.

It is alleged that on February 8th, at Clive Lloyd Drive, Best drove a car, PRR 812, in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Bentley.

At approximately 4.31 am, Bentley was riding his cycle, heading east on the Clive Lloyd Drive, where he was proceeding to Sheriff Street to meet a group of cyclists. Best, who was proceeding in the same direction, has alleged that the cyclist suddenly appeared in front of him and that he applied brakes and the right side of the front of his vehicle collided with the cyclist, who fell onto the roadway and sustained injuries. A lantern pole on the southern side of the road was dislodged by the vehicle as it came to a stop.

Best was arraigned before Principal Magistrate Faith Mc Gusty, where he was granted his release on $500,000 bail for the charge of causing death by dangerous.

He was then taken to the traffic court, where he appeared before Magistrate Clive Nurse, who read him the charge of driving under the influence of alcohol. He was released on self-bail.
