UK Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab yesterday added his voice to the continuing calls for the declaration of the March 2nd elections results using the figures from the pain-staking recount done in the presence of CARICOM scrutineers.
In a tweet yesterday, he said “It has been over 4 months since the people of #Guyana went to the polls – a result is still pending. The Elections Commission should declare on the basis of the
@CARICOMorg scrutinised recount. Guyana deserves an election result that reflects the will of its people”.
Senior officials of the US, UK, Canada and the European Union have kept up a flurry of statements on ensuring a transparent result and the utilisation of the figures from the recount.
On Wednesday US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo unveiled visa restrictions against those Guyanese here undermining democracy or who are complicit in the process. Relatives of these persons may also be subject to these restrictions.
Canada yesterday stated that it “… will continue to work with its partners in the international community, using all tools at our disposal, to demand a swift and transparent conclusion to the election process and hold accountable those who prevent it.”
The statements underline a growing concern locally and internationally that APNU+AFC have no intention of leaving office even though the validated recount results show that they lost the general elections by a wide margin.
