Linden man charged over Facebook death threat to GECOM Chair

A Linden man has been charged with threatening to kill the chairwoman of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), Justice (ret’d) Claudette Singh.

Ryan Williams, 27, of Silver City, Linden, appeared at the Linden Magistrate’s Court yesterday and denied the charge, which reads that between July 13th and July 14th, in Linden, with the use of a computer, he used a fake Facebook account to threaten the Chair and her family.

The matter was heard by Magistrate Wanda Fortune via a Zoom call.

Williams was asked to post $500,000 bail and was advised to return to the court on August 3rd.

According to the Guyana Police Force, Williams used a fake Facebook profile to create a status in which he issued a threat to the Chairwoman and members of her family. After the post was made public, ranks from the Guyana Police Force’s Cyber Crime Unit traced the IP address back to Williams’ computer. He was then arrested and cautioned. Police say he confessed to the offence of using a computer system to coerce, harass, intimidate, humiliate, etc.

Upon summary conviction for the offence, a person faces a $5 million fine and three years’ imprisonment.
