Dear Editor,
I have been trying to think of a metaphor for the Election farrago. How about a five-month football match? Both sides start off with eleven players, a referee called Singh and two assistant referees – let’s call them Lowenfield and Mingo. All goes well for the first half then Mingo says he – and only he – has seen three extra goals go in for the Granger side. Match aborted and three new referees brought in from abroad. They say the result is as at half time but the Granger side says the Jagdeo team had brought in eleven ‘ringers’ disguised as players/voters. They go to a new set of external referees – the Courts. They put one or two or three of their subs on to play to the Courts. But these even newer referees and all of the spectators still say the first half was fair. The second original assistant referee Lowenfield disagrees. He says he saw ghosts playing on the Jagdeo side!
‘Ah’ say the Granger team in desperation ‘we were playing rugby, you were playing soccer’.
Chaos, confusion, game called off?
Will that do for the sports pages? Or for Guyana? Hope not.
Yours faithfully,
John ‘Bill Cotton/Reform’ Mair
