Up to last Thursday, Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara) had only five active cases of COVID-19 that originated in the region.
The region was among the first regions to confirm novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases in Guyana.
Regional Health Officer (RHO) Dr Cerdel McWatt said a total of 28 persons from Region Three had since tested positive for the disease. At the time he spoke with this newspaper there were only five.
McWatt added, however, that the isolation facility at the West Demerara Regional Hospital (WDRM) was occupied by other persons from various regions and he revealed that there were 12 persons in the facility, inclusive of Region Three’s five active COVID-19 cases.
Thus far, he stated, sufficient personal protective equipment (PPE) is being provided by the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) while the region is catering to the needs of the patient.
