Guyana yesterday reported 19 new COVID-19 cases, all from Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo), which put the country’s total number of cases to date at 389.

Guyana’s positive cases continue to rise, most notably in the hinterland regions, which now account for more than half of the total number of cases recorded in the country.

During the Ministry of Public Health’s COVID-19 update on Monday, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Shamdeo Persaud announced the new cases recorded from Region Nine.

Dr. Persaud reported that 143 more persons were tested for the virus, which increased the total number of persons tested to 4,416. There are 188 persons in institutional isolation and 34 persons in institutional quarantine, while four persons are in the COVID-19 ICU.

Giving a breakdown of the situation at Guyana’s only COVID-19 ICU and the Georgetown Public Hospital, the Chief Medical Officer stated that some 57 patients have now been seen at the facility, while 11 persons in total have died while in the ICU. He went on to say five persons who were COVID-19 positive died at the hospital but outside the ICU. Nine persons in total have recovered from the virus and were discharged.

“For your information, those discharged from the ICU and isolation centres are in accordance with the recent WHO guidelines which Guyana adopted,” he said.
