Guyana has now recorded a total of 401 COVID-19 cases since the outbreak began in the country.
Yesterday, the announcement was made during the Ministry of Public Health’s COVID-19 update by the Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Shamdeo Persaud.
Out of the three new cases that were recorded, two are from Region Seven and one has been recorded in Georgetown.
Seventy-eight more persons were tested for the virus which increased the total number of persons tested to 4,641. There are currently 196 persons in institutional isolation which is equivalent to the number of active cases at the time. In addition, 185 persons have so far recovered from the virus while three persons are still in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit. Fifty persons are currently in institutional quarantine.
Dr Persaud said that while today is a national holiday, Eid-ul-Adha, those participating in it must be cognizant of the local COVID-19 situation and make the necessary adjustments so that exposure to the virus is nullified. He stressed the importance of having persons adhere to social distancing and other guidelines and having alternative arrangements in place regarding the distribution of meat during the holiday.
Noting another holiday is to be celebrated tomorrow, Dr Persaud further implored that Guyana’s COVID-19 guidelines should be at the core of all celebrations. “As we’re about to celebrate over this long weekend please remember that your health and safety are at risk”, he said.
