Armed bandits on Friday evening robbed the Long Sheng Supermarket, Grocery and Hardware Store, at Port Mourant, Corentyne, of over $1.4 million in cash and other valuables.
Bao Sheng Zou, 22, operates the business with an older relative, Qiu Jing Zou, 48, at Lot 9 ‘A’ Ankerville, Port Mourant.
The three bandits who carried out the attack reportedly robbed Bao Sheng of $1.4 million in cash, $50,000 in GTT and Digicel phone cards, and a cellphone, valued $144,000.
They also robbed Qiu Jing Zou of $10,000 in cash and Saroja Ramdihal, 21, a salesgirl of Ankerville, Port Mourant, of one Samsung Galaxy S5, valued $35,000.
According to information gathered by this newspaper, three masked men, two of whom were armed with handguns and the other with a cutlass, stormed their way into the supermarket, which is located on the lower flat of a three storey building.
Upon entering, one bandit with a gun demanded cash from Ramdial, who was standing next to the cashier’s booth in the supermarket.
However, after realising that Bao Sheng was present in the cashier’s booth, the bandit pushed Ramdial into the booth next to Bao Sheng.
In surveillance footage seen by this newspaper, the bandit can be seen dealing the businessman a kick to his head and gun butting him several times.
The bandit then ordered Ramdial to fill his haversack with cash from the register, while the bandit who was armed with the cutlass rushed over to Qiu Jing and relieved her of cash from the second register.
The three men while escaping on foot were noticed entering a car waiting on them in a nearby village.
Meanwhile, police yesterday afternoon conducted a search for narcotics, stolen articles and wanted persons at three houses in Rose Hall Town, Corentyne and at Portuguese Quarters, Port Mourant, Corentyne.
Stabroek News was told that, as a result of those searches Denzil Thomas, 26, unemployed of Lot 114 Carpen Street Rose Hall Town, Corentyne, Kelvin Bates, 23, unemployed of Lot 56 New Market Street, Corentyne, and Nitish Nandlall, 34, a hire car driver of Lot 20 Portuguese Quarters, Port Mourant, were arrested.
A source yesterday confirmed that investigators did not find any stolen items at the locations.
