The suspected bandit who was killed after being shot after a home invasion at Nandy Park, East Bank Demerara on Sunday night, has been identified as a resident of Castello Housing Scheme, La Penitence.
The now dead man has been identified as 21-year-old Dominic Downer, of Lot 8 Walker Terrace, Castello Housing Scheme, La Penitence, Georgetown.
Police Commander of Region Four (B) Senior Superintendent Kurleigh Simon told Stabroek News that Downer was positively identified by his mother yesterday morning.
The mother, in a statement to the police, said she last saw her son on Sunday at around 2pm. He reportedly visited his home to change his clothes and left immediately after.
When Stabroek News visited Downer’s home yesterday, a relative declined to comment and said the family did not have anything to say.
Police, in a brief statement, said yesterday morning that Downer was killed following an armed confrontation with a public-spirited citizen, who is a licensed firearm holder.
The police said a cell phone belonging to one of the victims was found in Downer’s possession and an unlicensed pistol with three live rounds of ammunition was retrieved next to his body. According to the statement, Downer was one of two perpetrators who invaded a home and carted off cash, jewellery and cellular phones. Efforts are being made to apprehend the other suspect who managed to flee the scene, the police added. Two men gained entry into the Nandy Park family’s home just after 8.30 pm.
The men scaled the fence and jumped into the verandah before making their way into the house.
Upon entering, the bandits, who were armed with guns, demanded cash and jewellery. Stabroek News understands that the men gathered an undisclosed amount of valuables before escaping.
This newspaper learnt that the bandit was shot a short distance away from the robbery scene.
