The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) yesterday welcomed the conclusion of Guyana’s General and Regional Elections of 2 March 2020 with the declaration of the final results.
In a statement, CARICOM also congratulated Ali and the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) on their victory at the polls. The statement said that Chairman of CARICOM, Dr Ralph Gonsalves, Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines called President Ali to extend his best wishes, while Secretary-General, Ambassador Irwin LaRocque, personally conveyed his congratulations to the President at Sunday’s Swearing-in Ceremony.
“CARICOM commends the people of Guyana for their patience and maturity during this protracted process, and will continue to support the country in its development efforts under its new Government”, the statement said.
CARICOM played a crucial role in the electoral process by brokering an agreement for a recount of votes from the March 2nd elections and also provided a team of observers to scrutinise the 32-day recounting of ballots.
There were also several strong statements from former CARICOM Chair, Barbadian Prime Minister Mia Mottley and Gonsalves for the upholding of the recount results.
