Former Guyana Defence Force (GDF) captain Orwain Sandy was this morning sentenced to life in prison for what Justice Sandil Kissoon described as the heinous, brutal slaying of his partner Reona Payne, whom he shot 14 times back in 2018.
The judge sternly warned that the despicable act committed by Sandy is inexcusable, cannot be condoned and that a strong message of deterrence needed to be sent to potential offenders.
He will have to serve 20 years before being considered for parole.
The killing took place around 10.15 am at First Street, Alexander Village, after which Sandy drove himself to the Ruimveldt Police Station and informed the police there of what transpired.
He also handed over the suspected murder weapon and was subsequently placed into custody.
