Five Americas federations qualified for division three when the curtain fell on the final day of division four pool play of the 2020 FIDE Online Olympiad.
Suriname and Puerto Rico were the first to grab qualifying spots from Pool D when they placed second and third to Angola. Not making it past division three from Pool D were Netherlands Antilles and Haiti who were fifth and sixth.
Pool E was an all-Americas affair, with the first seven places going to Nicaragua, Honduras, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Aruba, Guyana and Bermuda.
Nicaragua, Honduras, and Jamaica join Suriname and Puerto Rico as the five qualifiers for division three, which starts on Friday.
Special recognition must go the teams of Puerto Rico and Bahamas, several of whose players were personally impacted by passing hurricane Isaias but still continued to play.
Top of the individual performances for Pool E were WFM Zuzana Kovacova of Bermuda on Board three and Jamaica’s CM Rachel Millar on Board six, who played and won all nine matches.
Nicaragua’s Michelle Ferrufino on Board four, who was rested for the last round, deserves special mention for winning all eight of the matches she played.
In Pool D, FM Danitza Vasquez Maccarini, Puerto Rico’s Board three, was the only player in the Pool to play all nine matches with a 100% score. Amazingly the played all matches, 100% club has been monopolized by the women’s boards.
Guyana’s Candidate Master Wendell Meusa won all six of his games.
WCM Crystal Deng Jing Xin and Jun Lin Ze of Hong Kong on Boards three and four were the only players in Pool A to join the club as did Malta’s WFM Oana Caruana Pulpan on Board three in Pool B.
The only male player to play all of the matches was Syria’s Manar Khalil on Board 6 in Pool B.
