Guyana under-17 batsman, Matthew Nandu stroked an impressive century upon returning to cricket over the weekend following a near 11-month absence.
Nandu led his side, Kaieteur International B, to an imposing 312 for three in 46.5 overs while the bowlers restricted Durham to 160 all out in 37 overs in the Scarborough Cricket League 50-over tournament at the Ellesmere Reservoir Park South, Canada.
Winning the toss and opting to bat Kaieteur’s opener, Nandu, hammered 146 from 150 balls. His inning was highlighted by three sixes and 15 fours before he was caught by Lincoln Mohammed off of Surendra Seeraj who finished with one for 42 from seven overs.
After the match, Nandu told Stabroek Sport, “It feels great to be back out there on the field again, I’ve been waiting for close to 11 months to play cricket again.”
“Going out there yesterday I tried to make use of the opportunity as much as possible by putting all the training I’ve been doing into practice.”
“To score a century on return feels great however I have to put it behind me and continue to do my best,” he said.
“The next game I plan to go out there with a clear mind and with the same drive and passion,” he added.
Kaieteur’s top order all had starts with opener, Navin Nauth making 26 before he was bowled by Fareed Mohamed (1-61). Marcus Nandu (35 not out), Arjuna Sukhu (30) and Ravindra Nauth (14 not out) were the other principal scorers. Durham did not help their cause as they gifted 61 extras.
In reply, Durham struggled to forge convincing partnerships.
Kevin White top scored with an unbeaten 33 from 62 balls. Neron Phillip scored 28 and Kashique Yorke chipped in with 24. Nigel Ramsaroop picked up four for 19. Trevon Jerrick supported with three for 54 and Vinakshor Khemraj bagged two for 33. Marcus Nandu also had one for 25.
