One new death and 23 new COVID-19 cases were reported yesterday by the Ministry of Public Health.
Guyana has now recorded a total of 497 COVID-19 positive cases along with 21 deaths as a result of the virus. This was revealed by Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Shamdeo Persaud during the Ministry of Public Health’s COVID-19 update.
Giving a breakdown of the regional distribution of the 23 new cases that were recorded, he said eight were from Region Seven, four from Kanapang in Region Eight, with the remaining cases were distributed in Aranaputa and Annai, in Region Nine.
It was announced that 82 more persons were tested, bringing the total number of persons tested to 4,975. There are currently 289 patients within institutional isolation, which account for the country’s active cases as of yesterday. Additionally, 38 persons are in institutional quarantine while two persons remain in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit. As of Tuesday, Persaud noted, 186 persons have recovered.
The Chief Medical Officer reiterated that the number of cases continue to climb, especially in the hotspot areas of regions Seven and Nine. “You would have heard that in the space of 96 hours that is four days, we have reported 96 new cases which is not a very bright picture,” he said, while urging that persons in all regions of the country need to make the special effort to continue playing their part in spreading the message about COVID-19 as the virus is not selective or exclusive.
He went on to say that a number of myths about the disease needs to be dispelled so as to “break the back of the camel,” not only in regions Seven and Nine but in all other communities. Persaud also urged persons to contact the health authorities if they are exhibiting symptoms of the virus.
