Health ministry to employ COVID-19 case tracking consultants

The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) is currently looking for eight COVID-19 case tracking consultants, who will be expected to work within the various regions of the country.

The selection of consultants will be based on qualifications and relevant experience in keeping with the demands of the position. The Health Ministry of the previous government had been criticised for not taking more stringent efforts for contact tracing  in relation to COVID-19 positive cases.

According to an advertisement in yesterday’s edition of Stabroek News, the Government of Guyana has received financing from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States to assist with the country’s COVID-19 response.

“The declared Public Health emergency… CDC will be supporting a number of activities in Guyana in order to support acceleration, planning and operational readiness for COVID-19 preparedness and response,” the advertisement stated.

As such, part of the funding will go towards paying the COVID-19 case trackers. Qualified applicants are encouraged to apply no later than August 21.

When the office of the Permanent Secretary of the MoPH was contacted yesterday for details, Stabroek News was told to speak with persons within the Health Emergency Operations Centre (HEOC) team to get more information concerning the COVID-19 case trackers and contacting tracing. However, the Deputy Director of the HEOC, Leston Payne said that the HEOC team has not been briefed on the situation since the members of the former COVID-19 task force were relieved of their duties. He added that a meeting with the new task force was scheduled for yesterday but due to the swearing-in of new minsters, that meeting was postponed.
