Dear Editor,
Is the government being hypocritical by allowing a large number of people to attend President Ali’s inauguration and limiting the number of people attending churches?
The Government of Guyana had handed down an edict in the midst of COVID-19 that limits the total attendance in any church service.
Now, that’s to be contrasted with the fact that hundreds of people poured into the Cultural Centre for the inauguration with little social distancing, including the President of Suriname who was not quarantined for seven days. Is there a double standard?
After the government had issued a directive that severely limits attendance at religious services at churches, mandirs and mosques, why would the government discriminate in favour of the inauguration?
Editor, the citizens of Guyana have a duty to defend our religious freedom in the constitution and even a public health emergency does not absolve us of that responsibility.
Yours faithfully,
Anthony Pantlitz
