The Director of Sports along with members of the National Sports Commission will be named within the coming weeks.
This is according to Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Charles Ramson Jr., who, Saturday, hosted an interactive session with the sport media fraternity at Duke Lodge, Kingston.
“I would say within a matter of weeks you are going to get a new Sports Director… I obviously know the need of having a Sports Director in place ASAP [as soon as possible],” he declared.
The minister, however, opted to be ambiguous by saying “at the moment I would be vague in saying a matter of weeks.”
According to the minister it could be “a week or five weeks,” for the appointments.
Ramson Jr., acknowledged that there was an urgency to have the Director of Sports and the Sports Commission members installed but said that he would not be rushing the process.
He reiterated that the life of the present Sports Commission members have expired under the National Sports Commission Act.
On the issue of the Director of Sports, Ramson Jr., said that contrary to various reports, there has been no appointment to the post but revealed that persons are being considered.
“I obviously need to set up the National Sports Commission again. We obviously need to get our Sports Director appointed which incidentally I know some people have covered it already saying the person is appointed and all these things, the person is not,” Ramson Jr., stated while adding, “we are considering people. We have people in mind and that’s all I would like to say on the issue at the moment on the issue of the Sports Director because it really should be an issue that should come from the process.”
Meanwhile, Ramson Jr., said that he plans to have consultation engagements in order to make amendments to the Sports Commission Act.
“Most of the sports programmes and the way in which it functions is under the Act. I have taken the time to go through it and at another engagement I will ask you to have a consultation engagement with me to see if there is any amendments to be made for that Act,” Ramson told the media.
