Three new COVID-19 deaths were recorded within the last three days and Guyana has now officially recorded 25 deaths in total as a result of the virus.
The latest COVID-19 death was recorded yesterday bringing Guyana’s death toll to 25. According to a press release from the Ministry of Health on Tuesday, the 25th COVID-19 fatality was a patient at the Bartica Hospital who died while receiving care.
The health ministry stated that the 32-year-old man had tested positive for COVID-19 subsequent to his death. The only information provided to the media by the ministry states that the man was a resident of Region One, and at the time of his hospitalisation was working in the mining community in the Cuyuni River in Region 7. Additionally, the release noted that the man was rushed to the hospital with suspected malaria but was swabbed because of his contact with other suspected cases at his worksite. Further the Ministry also confirmed the 24th death which occurred on Monday at the Georgetown Public Hospital. It was reported that it was an 87-year-old man who was receiving treatment in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit prior to his death. Information reaching Stabroek News revealed that the 87-year-old died on Monday morning. However, that death was not recorded and reflected on the August 17 Dashboard which was posted on Monday evening.
It was noted that health officials were in contact with relatives of the deceased along with other contacts to facilitate contact tracing and assistance to persons who were possibly exposed to positive cases.
Guyana recorded its 23rd death as a result of the virus on Sunday and that patient was identified as 73-year-old Wilfred James.
