Guyana on Friday recorded its 31st COVID-19 fatality and confirmed 35 more infections from recent testing.

On Friday evening, the Ministry of Health announced the latest death, who was identified as a 47-year-old woman who died at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).

No other information surrounding the patient was announced, except that the ministry was in contact with the patient’s family to facilitate contact tracing and assistance to everyone who may have been exposed.

The ministry asked that patient confidentiality be respected as it again called for families to be allowed to mourn in peace.

From Sunday, August 16th up to last evening, Guyana recorded a total of nine deaths as a result of COVID-19 at state health facilities. The casualties have ranged in age from 32 years old to 87 years old, with six of the nine deaths coming from the GPH’s Intensive Care Unit and Transitional Unit, while the other three were recorded at the Bartica Regional Hospital.

Meanwhile, during an online update on the COVID-19 situation in Guyana, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Shamdeo Persaud yesterday announced that 35 new persons tested positive for the virus, increasing the total number of positive cases recorded in the country to 881 to date.

The newest results come from the tests administered to 126 persons.

It was noted that approximately 86% of the 6,628 persons tested to date across the country have tested negative for the virus.

The Chief Medical Officer stated that there are currently 410 persons who are under close monitoring, while 77 persons are currently in institutional isolation along with 333 persons in approved home isolation. Additionally, 34 more persons have recovered from the virus, taking the country’s total recoveries to 433. Those recovered persons, Persaud noted, have been released for home monitoring with strict measures to prevent “further re-infection.”
