A late morning accident yesterday at Kuru Kuru Public Road, Soesdyke-Linden Highway has left one person dead and another hospitalised after the car they were travelling in collided with a truck.
Dead is Kevon Hilton Newland, also known as ‘John,’ of Lot 338 Wisroc Housing Scheme, Linden.
Newland, who was a father of three children, was a passenger in the hire car, HC 6304, which was driven by Orin Rose, 30, of Yuriballi Street, Retrieve, Linden, who is currently hospitalised at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) after receiving multiple lacerations about his head and body as a result of the accident.
According to a police statement, the accident occurred at 11:20 am along the Kuru Kuru Public Road. Sunday Stabroek was told that a witness who was driving in the northern direction along the public road observed the truck, which was driven by Terrence Ali, 26, turning north onto the western side of the road. He subsequently slowed down to allow the truck to complete the turn.
At the same time, Rose was also proceeding north and was some distance behind the car that slowed when he allegedly overtook the car at a fast rate after which he lost control of his vehicle. As a result he collided with the left rear wheel of the trailer and then further collided with the left side of the truck lorry.
Newland, Rose and Shemron Niles, who was also a passenger of the car, received injuries about their bodies and were picked up by public-spirited citizens and the police. They were placed in the Guyana Defence Force ambulance and were taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre, where Newland was pronounced dead on arrival. Rose and Niles were subsequently examined by a doctor. Niles was treated and sent away, while Rose was transferred to the GPH, where he was further examined and was later admitted to the male surgical ward.
Additionally, it was disclosed that an unknown female, who was also involved in the accident fled the scene after the accident. Regional Traffic Officer and Assistant Superintendent J. Harper, when contacted yesterday afternoon, told Sunday Stabroek that police were still looking for the woman.
The driver of the truck was taken into custody to assist with the investigation.
