Following their nail-biting win over Jamaica Tallawahs in match eight of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), skipper of the Guyana Amazon Warriors Chris Green is in high praise of his bowlers but believes the batsmen are overdue on runs.
Warriors posted a relatively low 118 all out but returned to contain Tallawahs to 104 for 7 rewriting the record books for the lowest total defended in the CPL.
Green, after the match, indicated that his team was particularly confident at the half way stage despite missing their target by “10-15 runs.
“Look we were actually very positive [at the half way mark], it’s one of those games where low scoring totals, all the pressure on their side, we knew the wicket was quite tough to bat on. We did feel we were probably 10-15 runs short with the bat.”
The captain noted, “We got a special bowling lineup and we asked for a special performance and I thought tonight’s performance was it.”
Debutant, Ashmead Nedd struck with his first ball of the match and ended with 1-10 from his four overs while Chandrapaul Hemraj, Naveen Ul-Haq and Green were all economical.
Speaking of Nedd, Green said, “I was excited to see him go to work. I watched him from afar in the under-19 World Cup. He trained with us last year and I think bowling to those guys shows tremendous amount of character and I think he’s got a bright future ahead of him and I’m excited to continue to use him this tournament.”
On the other hand, Green posited that the batting line up has not yet fired in the three matches so far but with that being said, he believes that it could be exciting times ahead when the explosive hitters get going.
“When you look at our batting line up we’ve had guys miss out, Brandon King, Hemraj are overdue, [Nicholas] Pooran’s overdue, [Sherfane] Rutherford’s overdue. “I think you’ve got four quality players there saying are overdue, I think it’s exciting for the tournament and scare for the opposition to come…to see four batters overdue I can’t wait to see them get among the runs.”
Green reiterated his team’s plan for the tournament which is to peak towards the backend of the tournament while relating that he is happy with the position so far.
Looking ahead to their match against St. Lucia Zouks today at 14.14 hours, the captain called for the building of more partnerships and taking the positives out of yesterday’s game.
“I think it’s [the key is] to continue to focus on the positives, the key today was obviously our tremendous bowling performance, with batting on this wicket if conditions are similar we know it’s going to be a scrap, we’ve got to build partnerships.
“I think those multiple wickets obviously hurt us and hurt Jamaica as well, we were able to build a lot of pressure with the ball and so were they so we just got to work on building partnerships and taking a few learning objectives and positives out of this game,” Green stated.
