Dear Editor,
The Cultural Symbol for Peace, Justice, and National Reconciliation will be on display on Tuesday 1st of September 2020 from 10 AM to 1 PM on the wide-open space of the Square of the Revolution in keeping with the Covid-19 recommendations.
There will not be a formal opening. On display is also a Covid-19 painting advising Guyana to take all precautions, be responsible, and stay safe. Sensitizing Guyanese as to the rapid spread of the virus, the need for us to close ranks, and to be each other’s keeper.
September is observed as Indigenous Month, for almost two decades an Exhibition of Indigenous Art/Craft was held by the “moving Circle of Artists” founded by the late Guyanese artist George Simon AA, in collaboration with the National Gallery.
Our cultural heritage is an important part of the social, economic and political life of our country which is often not acknowledged or recognized so much so that any genuine movement for national reconciliation must address the burning issue that faces our nation.
What can really contribute to healing the open wounds of our nation at a time when thousands of Guyanese are with their backs against the wall as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic is for the Government to act wisely, to promote an atmosphere of stability in attracting foreign investment, employment opportunities and tourism in the post Covid-19 period.
Yours faithfully,
Desmond Alli
