Akilah Atherley has recently expanded her designing to include creating home ornaments, the most recent of which is a wine bottle set.
Though Akilah began making these creative wine bottle pieces a year ago, the Covid-19 situation saw her increase production. When she first started last year, she redesigned her recycled wine and rum bottles with fabric but has since evolved to making the bottle crafts using twines, a skill she has learnt after closely following tutorials on YouTube.
“In a sense the pandemic has affected my decision in choosing to do this. I mainly design clothing but because people are hardly going anywhere now, I had to find something else to do. Everyone is stuck at home now and are putting more efforts into doing things at home. I want the place where they dwell to not only be the happiest place for them in the world but also, the loveliest place to be, where they are surrounded by colours and art,” Akilah said.
She has already received several orders for these sets and is working on them.
Despite the negative effects of the pandemic, the crisis has also brought out more creativity in the artist. She added that her mind has coming up with many different ideas and she has also been spending some of her time painting abstract/surreal art pieces that are available for sale.
Akilah is also caught up on a new hobby, learning how to sculpt
bottles into art pieces and is really excited about this next venture of hers. She is following an online class and hopes to have these new art pieces available to clients soon.
