Guyana yesterday recorded two additional COVID-19-related fatalities along with 72 new cases of the virus.
The Ministry of Health announced that two additional COVID-19 deaths were recorded which took the country’s total fatalities as a result of the virus up to 41. This number has risen sharply in recent weeks.
According to the health ministry, the two patients were identified as an 89-year-old man from Region Nine while the other was a 47-year-old from Region Seven. When the patients were admitted to the various medical facilities they were swabbed for the virus and the results which came back after their deaths showed that they had tested positive for the virus.
The ministry noted that they had initiated dialogue with relatives and contacts of both patients so as to facilitate contact tracing and assistance to persons who were exposed.
Meanwhile, the ministry’s dashboard showed that some 72 new cases were recorded which increased Guyana’s total positive cases to 1,306. Some 215 more persons were tested for the virus during the last testing cycle which increased the total number of persons tested to 8,510.
There are currently 451 persons in approved home isolation while some 87 persons are in institutional isolation, those persons account for the number of active cases at the time. Some 129 persons are currently in institutional quarantine while 12 persons are in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit.
A total of 876 cases of the novel coronavirus were recorded in Guyana for the month of August even as 21 deaths were recorded, both being the highest monthly increase in cases and deaths in Guyana since the beginning of the outbreak here in March.
