A 40-year-old pedal cyclist died after he was struck down by a speeding motor vehicle along the Rupert Craig Highway yesterday afternoon.
Dead is Navindra Doray of Lot 101 Block F, Sophia. He sustained injuries to his body including his head and died on the spot.
Traffic Chief Ramesh Ashram said the accident occurred around 1 pm outside of Yokohama Trading.
The driver of the motor vehicle, GTT 8153 who has been identified as Kareem Akidu Isiah, a Trinidadian national of Oronoque Street, Queenstown and an occupant, Bradley Charlie, 32, were also injured.
They were both taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) where they were receiving medical attention up to late last night.
Investigations, according to Ashram, revealed that the motor vehicle was proceeding west along the Rupert Craig Highway, at a fast rate.
As it approached Yokohama Trading, the driver undertook a minibus and collided with Doray, who was proceeding in the same direction.
As a result, the driver lost control and collided with Yokohama Trading fence. The vehicle then turned turtle before it came to a halt.
When Stabroek News visited the scene yesterday, a large number of police officers including Ashram were present conducting the investigation. As they awaited the arrival of the hearse to remove Doray’s body, passers-by slowed down for a glimpse of what was happening.
The accident also caused a build-up in traffic. Traffic heading to Georgetown had to be diverted from Liliendaal onto the Railway Embankment road.
